Episode 4 - Sky-High Adventure

Is there a place you dream of visiting with your furry best friend? For Halbae, that place is the breathtaking peaks of Geumjeongsan Mountain in Busan.

In this week's Imaginary Adventure, Halbae and Namu embark on a grand flight. They step away from their cozy living room. They board a cable car rising high into the sky. The city of Busan begins to shrink beneath them. Namu looks out the window with wide, curious eyes.

But can a little house cat handle the dizzying heights of a mountain peak? Will Namu enjoy the sweeping views, or will the high altitude be too much for our gentle ginger tabby? Let's join their dreamlike journey!

💡Satoori Spotlight: Eok-su-ro (억수로)

The moment Halbae shares this beautiful mountain journey with Namu, he uses his favorite Busan expression not just once, but twice to show his deep affection:

"억수로 쪼매나제?" (Eok-su-ro jjo-mae-na-je?) "It's incredibly tiny, right?" 

"억수로 이뿌제?" (Eok-su-ro i-ppu-je?) "It's incredibly beautiful, right?"

These sentences feature a word that perfectly captures the deep, intense emotion of Busan locals.

  • Standard Korean: 아주 (A-ju) or 매우 (Mae-u) — Meaning "Very" or "Extremely."

  • Busan Satoori: 억수로 (Eok-su-ro) — Meaning "Incredibly," "Enormously," or "Tons."

Busan Satoori is famous for its dynamic intonation and strong emphasis. The word Eok-su-ro originates from the word for a heavy downpour of rain or a huge harvest. When a Busan local says Eok-su-ro, it means "very" just isn't enough. It expresses an overwhelming amount of feeling. Halbae uses it twice because everything feels so much more intense and special when he is exploring with Namu.

A Standard Korean speaker might say this gently: "Aju jogumane" (It's very small) or "Aju yeppune" (It's very pretty).

However, the Busan version is short, punchy, and filled with rough affection. The accent drops heavily on the first syllable: 억수로! Listen to Halbae's authentic, heartwarming pronunciation below:

 

🐾 Butler's Note

As you all know, Namu is a strict indoor cat. She weighs 5.5kg and loves her safe, warm blankets. She would probably freeze with fear if she saw a real cable car!

That is why this episode is so special. Halbae always feels a bit sad leaving Namu behind when he goes for his mountain walks. In his imagination, they climbed Geumjeongsan Mountain together. They walked side by side along the ancient stone fortress wall. The pink azaleas were blooming beautifully in his mind.

The sweetest part of the dream? Halbae imagined Namu taking a peaceful nap on a sun-warmed rock at the very top. Even in his grandest adventures, Halbae just wants Namu to be comfortable and happy. When Halbae woke up from his daydream, he immediately gave the real Namu her favorite treats!

Getting to Busan

Where is Busan? Busan sits at the very southern tip of the Korean peninsula — as far south as you can go before you hit the sea. It's about 325km from Seoul, roughly the distance from London to Paris, or New York to Boston. Korea is a small country. Episode 7 - Selective Hearing Namu has absolutely excellent hearing. The tiniest rustle of a treat bag makes her jump instantly — so it is definitely not a medical issue. She simply doesn't choose to hear everyone equally. The other day, I beeped in through the front door and called her name from the entryway. Nothing. I walked over and tapped her gently on the back. Still nothing. I even carefully grabbed the very tip of her tail — and Namu didn't move a single inch. She just kept staring fixedly out the window. Like a furry piece of living room furniture, she sat there completely unbothered. She wasn't asleep, and there was absolutely no way she didn't know I was standing right there.
