Our cat Namu has an obvious favorite — and it's Halbae (Grandpa). Like a "Dog Whisperer" or "Horse Whisperer," Halbae seems to have Namu completely figured out. He doesn't have that magic touch with other cats, but Namu alone hangs on his every word and turns into the gentlest little lamb whenever he's around. Halbae really might be the true Namu Whisperer. The evidence is everywhere. Even a simple churu treat gets a different reaction depending on who's holding it. When my mom (Halmae) or I give her one, Namu eats it standing up — one bite, and she's already halfway to walking away, like she's just grabbing a quick snack before heading off. But when Halbae offers her a churu? She goes straight to his usual spot, sits down, and settles in like she's planning to stay a while. Calling her works the same way. Our Imaginary Adventure series started with Halbae's wish to explore Busan together with Namu, and so far we've wandered through mountains, the sea, and bustling markets. This time, I wanted to show that Busan isn't just about mountains and coastline — it has a beautiful river too. So this trip takes us to Samnak Ecological Park, one of Busan's favorite riverside escapes, where we cycle along the Nakdong River, pass through reeds, lotus ponds, and cosmos fields, and end the day watching the sunset. There are moments with pets that stop your heart. Namu has always been a calm, well-behaved cat who never causes trouble — but there is one incident from about five years ago that still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Namu was around one year old at the time. I got a call saying Namu had collapsed, foaming at the mouth. I left work early and rushed to our usual vet by taxi — only to find a line so long it would have been over an hour's wait. When I finally arrived, Namu was sitting on Halbae's lap, completely drained of energy. Even for a naturally calm cat, seeing her that limp and lifeless was heartbreaking. I heard the full story then. The usual vet had too long a wait, so Halbae had run to another clinic 200 meters up the hill. Halmae suggested waiting for a taxi, but Halbae just started running. Isn't the heat this summer just brutal? Day or night, it's hard to even catch a breath. So for this Imaginary Adventure, we decided to head somewhere cool — a seaside temple, Yonggungsa, that offers a completely different vibe from your typical beach. This time, since Namu and Halbae actually walk through it together, let me introduce it in more detail. Choosing Yonggungsa for this trip felt like a natural choice. Episode 10 - Namu's Busy Day Cats have their own routines. Sure, they spend most of their time sleeping — but when Namu is awake, she keeps herself very busy. And her mornings always begin with the sound of Halmae's familiar footsteps. Namu lies next to the still-sleeping Halbae, ears perked up and alert. She waits patiently until one of them stirs. Quietly, she listens for the faint sound of movement from inside the room. The moment she hears it, she rises contentedly from her spot. She stretches — one long, satisfying stretch — then heads toward the sound. Soon after, Halbae emerges from the room. True to his no-nonsense nature, the very first thing he does every single morning is walk straight to Namu's litter box and quietly crouch down to clean it. Without fail, every day, he tidies it up for her. He may seem gruff on the outside, but his devotion to Namu never wavers. And wherever Halbae goes, a little orange shadow is never far behind. Episode 9 - Lost and Found A peaceful afternoon sun fills the quiet living room. Halmae stands at the kitchen sink, washing the lunch dishes. The cool sound of running water echoes through the calm house. It is a perfectly ordinary, relaxing day in Busan. Suddenly, a tiny, faint sound cuts through the running water. It is a very soft, sad meow. Halmae freezes and turns off the faucet. She looks around the kitchen, but the house is completely still. Halmae searches all of Namu's favorite spots. She checks the sunny living room window. She looks under the bed and inside the wardrobe. But our gentle ginger tabby is nowhere to be found. Her heart instantly sinks with worry. Episode 8 - The Halbae Radar Namu is a professional sleeper. She spends most of her day napping on her favorite brown leather sofa. She curls up into a perfect orange furry ball. Nothing disturbs her peace. Suddenly, the front door clicks open. Gomo enters the house with a cheerful call, "Namu, I'm here!" But the sofa remains still. Namu does not even twitch an ear. A little while later, Halmae steps inside. "Namu, Halmae is home," she says warmly. Still, the orange ball does not move. It seems nothing can wake this sleepy cat. Then, a sudden shift happens. The house is completely quiet. No doors have opened yet. There is no sound at all. Yet, Namu’s ears suddenly perk up. Episode 7 - Selective Hearing Namu has absolutely excellent hearing. The tiniest rustle of a treat bag makes her jump instantly — so it is definitely not a medical issue. She simply doesn't choose to hear everyone equally. The other day, I beeped in through the front door and called her name from the entryway. Nothing. I walked over and tapped her gently on the back. Still nothing. I even carefully grabbed the very tip of her tail — and Namu didn't move a single inch. She just kept staring fixedly out the window. Like a furry piece of living room furniture, she sat there completely unbothered. She wasn't asleep, and there was absolutely no way she didn't know I was standing right there. She just... actively chose not to respond to me. But the moment Halbae calls her name from somewhere deep in the house, Namu instantly springs to life. At the first call, her ears perk up. At the second, she turns her head. By the third — she is already flying across the room. It happens...

Episode 3 - Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right Halmae is a true Busan person. Busan winters are generally milder than most other cities in South Korea, but they are still not mild enough for Halmae. The exact moment the coastal wind picks up or the temperature drops even slightly, she is immediately flat on the warm Ondol (온돌) underfloor heating. As far as she's concerned, there is no better place on earth to be. Namu feels exactly the same way. In that sense, Namu is a true Busan cat. The slightest winter chill and she is stretched out long on the living room floor, completely melted. If you touch the exact spot where Namu has been lying, it is always the warmest patch in the entire room. Halmae and Namu are completely alike in that way. So Halmae always laughs and says in her thick accent: "나무가 내 닮았다 아이가." (Namu takes after me, doesn't she!) Episode 6 - Namu Goes Missing Halmae called me, her voice trembling. Namu was missing. She had called her name a hundred times and searched every single corner of the house — but there was absolutely nothing. To make matters worse, it was rapidly getting dark outside, and the weather was turning bitterly cold, as if a heavy rain was about to pour. Namu loves warmth more than anything else in the world, and Halmae was so deeply worried that she was already in tears. Halbae and Halmae immediately went outside and began walking the neighborhood in the freezing air. Round and round they went, calling her name for about two hours. The moment I got the frantic call, I left work instantly and drove straight over to their house — I wanted to help with the search party. But by the time I finally arrived, they had just found her. Episode 2: Little Namu in Gamcheon One day, I asked Halbae a question. "If Namu could go anywhere with you, where would you take her?" He didn't have to think long. "Gamcheon," he said. Gamcheon Culture Village ( 감천문화마을 ) is a place Halbae used to visit often — a hillside neighborhood of brightly painted houses and winding alleys, stacked up against the mountain overlooking the distant sea. He knew every staircase, every sharp turn. But that was years ago. These days, his legs don't cooperate the way they used to, and Gamcheon is famously nothing but stairs. So, he simply stopped going. He didn't say any of this out loud, though. He just said "Gamcheon" — quietly, like the name had been waiting at the back of his mind.
