Slice of Life: Episode 14 - Higher Ground

Image
Grilled squid, grilled fish — it doesn't matter. Namu won't so much as glance at human food. No matter how good it smells, she won't set a paw on the table. About the most she'll do is sniff the air once while passing by. Whenever we sit down to eat, Namu usually heads for her own bowl, or if not that, she just stares out the window. Sitting across from Halbae at mealtime, I'll glance over and catch her looking anywhere but the table — so composed I sometimes wonder, "are you even a cat?" But the moment the meal ends and a water cup shows up on the table, everything changes. As soon as that cup lands on the table, Namu hops right up. She's so indifferent to human food, and yet so determined about that one cup — I still don't quite get it. Sometimes when the water's low and her tongue can't reach, she'll dip a paw straight into the cup to check. Watching her carefully stir the water around with that little paw is so cute that Halbae ca...

Slice of Life: Episode 13 - Namu Whisperer

Image
Our cat Namu has an obvious favorite — and it's Halbae (Grandpa). Like a "Dog Whisperer" or "Horse Whisperer," Halbae seems to have Namu completely figured out. He doesn't have that magic touch with other cats, but Namu alone hangs on his every word and turns into the gentlest little lamb whenever he's around. Halbae really might be the true Namu Whisperer. The evidence is everywhere. Even a simple churu treat gets a different reaction depending on who's holding it. When my mom (Halmae) or I give her one, Namu eats it standing up — one bite, and she's already halfway to walking away, like she's just grabbing a quick snack before heading off. But when Halbae offers her a churu? She goes straight to his usual spot, sits down, and settles in like she's planning to stay a while. Calling her works the same way. When I call "Namu!" or Halmae calls "Namu~," she barely reacts. But when Halbae calls her? No matter what sh...

Slice of Life: Episode 12 - Powered by Love

Image
There are moments with pets that stop your heart. Namu has always been a calm, well-behaved cat who never causes trouble — but there is one incident from about five years ago that still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Namu was around one year old at the time. I got a call saying Namu had collapsed, foaming at the mouth. I left work early and rushed to our usual vet by taxi — only to find a line so long it would have been over an hour's wait. When I finally arrived, Namu was sitting on Halbae's lap, completely drained of energy. Even for a naturally calm cat, seeing her that limp and lifeless was heartbreaking. I heard the full story then. The usual vet had too long a wait, so Halbae had run to another clinic 200 meters up the hill. Halmae suggested waiting for a taxi, but Halbae just started running. With Namu's carrier — Namu weighs over 5 kilos, plus the weight of the carrier — carried by a 75-year-old man, uphill. Halmae said she couldn't keep up even...

Slice of Life: Episode 11 - A Little Helper

Image
Cats are mysterious creatures. They seem to spend most of their time doing absolutely nothing — but sometimes, they're more diligent than any person in the house. And when Halbae starts moving, Namu's little paws get busy too.  She wants to be part of everything he does. Tail held high, she hovers near his side. When a delivery box arrives? She's already there before Halbae even touches the tape. She stretches her neck to see what's inside, then settles quietly beside him, watching every move he makes. And the moment the box is emptied? She climbs right in — as if she personally needs to approve it before anything else can happen. The same goes for laundry. Namu doesn't wander far — she follows Halbae right over. She finds her spot next to the neatly folding pile of clothes and watches his busy hands with those wide, serious eyes. And sure enough, the moment the laundry basket is empty, in she goes. When Halbae moves to the kitchen sink, Namu is right behind him. S...

Slice of Life: Episode 10 - Namu's Busy Day

Image
Episode 10 - Namu's Busy Day Cats have their own routines. Sure, they spend most of their time sleeping — but when Namu is awake, she keeps herself very busy. And her mornings always begin with the sound of Halmae's familiar footsteps. Namu lies next to the still-sleeping Halbae, ears perked up and alert. She waits patiently until one of them stirs. Quietly, she listens for the faint sound of movement from inside the room. The moment she hears it, she rises contentedly from her spot. She stretches — one long, satisfying stretch — then heads toward the sound. Soon after, Halbae emerges from the room. True to his no-nonsense nature, the very first thing he does every single morning is walk straight to Namu's litter box and quietly crouch down to clean it. Without fail, every day, he tidies it up for her. He may seem gruff on the outside, but his devotion to Namu never wavers. And wherever Halbae goes, a little orange shadow is never far behind. Namu's eyes follow his e...

Slice of Life : Episode 9 - Lost and Found

Image
Episode 9 - Lost and Found A peaceful afternoon sun fills the quiet living room. Halmae stands at the kitchen sink, washing the lunch dishes. The cool sound of running water echoes through the calm house. It is a perfectly ordinary, relaxing day in Busan. Suddenly, a tiny, faint sound cuts through the running water. It is a very soft, sad meow. Halmae freezes and turns off the faucet. She looks around the kitchen, but the house is completely still. Halmae searches all of Namu's favorite spots. She checks the sunny living room window. She looks under the bed and inside the wardrobe. But our gentle ginger tabby is nowhere to be found. Her heart instantly sinks with worry. Halmae throws off her rubber gloves and rushes outside. She runs into the narrow alleyway, calling out for Namu. Where could our sweet baby be? Will Halmae find her safely? 💡 Satoori Spotlight: 아이가? Introduce the unique Korean expression featured in the episode: "아이가?" ([A-i-ga?]) "Right? / Isn'...

Slice of Life: Episode 8 - The Halbae Radar

Image
Episode 8 - The Halbae Radar Namu is a professional sleeper. She spends most of her day napping on her favorite brown leather sofa. She curls up into a perfect orange furry ball. Nothing disturbs her peace. Suddenly, the front door clicks open. Gomo enters the house with a cheerful call, "Namu, I'm here!" But the sofa remains still. Namu does not even twitch an ear. A little while later, Halmae steps inside. "Namu, Halmae is home," she says warmly. Still, the orange ball does not move. It seems nothing can wake this sleepy cat. Then, a sudden shift happens. The house is completely quiet. No doors have opened yet. There is no sound at all. Yet, Namu’s ears suddenly perk up. She opens her eyes and sits straight up. 💡 Satoori Spotlight: 우째 (u-jjae) The moment Halbae steps inside and finds Namu waiting faithfully at the door, he lets out a classic regional question filled with wonder: "할배 오는 거 우째 알았노?" "How did you know Halbae was coming?" This...

Slice of Life: Episode 7 - Selective Hearing

Image
Episode 7 - Selective Hearing Namu has absolutely excellent hearing. The tiniest rustle of a treat bag makes her jump instantly — so it is definitely not a medical issue. She simply doesn't choose to hear everyone equally. The other day, I beeped in through the front door and called her name from the entryway. Nothing. I walked over and tapped her gently on the back. Still nothing. I even carefully grabbed the very tip of her tail — and Namu didn't move a single inch. She just kept staring fixedly out the window. Like a furry piece of living room furniture, she sat there completely unbothered. She wasn't asleep, and there was absolutely no way she didn't know I was standing right there. She just... actively chose not to respond to me. But the moment Halbae calls her name from somewhere deep in the house, Namu instantly springs to life. At the first call, her ears perk up. At the second, she turns her head. By the third — she is already flying across the room. It happens...

Slice of Life: Episode 6 - Namu Goes Missing

Image
Episode 6 - Namu Goes Missing Halmae called me, her voice trembling. Namu was missing. She had called her name a hundred times and searched every single corner of the house — but there was absolutely nothing. To make matters worse, it was rapidly getting dark outside, and the weather was turning bitterly cold, as if a heavy rain was about to pour. Namu loves warmth more than anything else in the world, and Halmae was so deeply worried that she was already in tears. Halbae and Halmae immediately went outside and began walking the neighborhood in the freezing air. Round and round they went, calling her name for about two hours. The moment I got the frantic call, I left work instantly and drove straight over to their house — I wanted to help with the search party. But by the time I finally arrived, they had just found her. They were actually just about to call me with the good news. Where on earth was Namu? 🐾 💡 Satoori Spotlight: 시껍했다 (si-kkeop-haet-da) After finally finding Namu comple...

Slice of Life: Episode 5 - Namu's Garden Escape

Image
Episode 5 - Namu's Garden Escape Namu is strictly an indoor cat. She knows this. I know this. Halmae knows this. But whenever the garden door opens, something clicks inside that tiny brain of hers — and her paws just instinctively follow. It all started with Halbae. Namu is practically his shadow, so whenever he went outside to water the plants or tidy up the yard, she would follow him right out. Halbae, being Halbae, simply couldn't bring himself to stop her. Over time, it became her favorite daily routine. I tried to set some ground rules, of course. I even fractured my foot once while frantically chasing her around the garden when she was just a tiny kitten! But Halbae always says he just can't say no when she looks up at him, wanting to explore the outdoors together. So now, I just have to trust her. Halbae has his reasons, Namu has her beloved garden, and that's just how it is.  In this episode, while Halmae was busy picking fresh tomatoes, Namu sat quietly in the ...

Slice of Life : Episode 4 - Waiting

Image
Episode 4 - Waiting They were moving. It was the kind of move that happens in exhausting stages — boxes here, bags there, and sleeping wherever you can manage. That particular night, Halbae stayed behind at the new house to sort through the chaos of unpacking. Namu and Halmae stayed over at Gomo's place. Namu was only six months old at the time. She had never spent a single night without Halbae since the day she was rescued. Halmae wasn't too worried at first, though. She had always heard that cats don't get that deeply attached to specific people. And besides, Namu was never a night owl. Some cats tear around the house at 3 AM like they've completely lost their minds, but not Namu. She always went to sleep exactly when Halbae did, every single night, without fail. So when she started crying long past bedtime and simply refused to stop, Halmae didn't know what to make of it. 💡Satoori Spotlight: 잠온다 (jam-on-da) In this episode, as the night grows later and Namu cont...

Slice of Life: Episode 3 - Just One More Goodbye

Image
Episode 3 - Just One More Goodbye There's something Halbae does every single time he leaves the house. He says goodbye to Namu. Then he gets his shoes on. Then he suddenly remembers something he forgot to tell her, so he walks back to say goodbye again. Then he finally opens the front door. Then — just before it completely clicks shut — he leans his head back inside for one last farewell. Halmae has long since stopped counting how many goodbyes it actually takes. She just stands patiently by the door with her bag, waiting for him to finish his long ritual. Sometimes she sighs. Sometimes she doesn't even bother. Halbae doesn't notice either way. To him, leaving without a proper goodbye isn't really leaving at all. And Namu — sitting comfortably by the window, watching his every move — seems to understand that completely. 💡Satoori Spotlight: 단디 (dan-di) In this episode, just before Halbae finally (and truly) steps out the door, he crouches down to Namu's eye level an...

Slice of Life: Episode 2 - The First Vet Visit

Image
Episode 2 - The First Vet Visit Halbae has never once shown up uninvited to a doctor's appointment. Not for Halmae. Not for anyone. But when it was Namu's turn to visit the vet, he was already standing by the front door. He group-declared that someone needed to keep her calm. Nobody argued — mostly because he had already picked up the heavy kennel himself. The whole way there, Namu cried. The whole way there and back, Halbae whispered. He kept tapping the kennel gently, letting Namu know he was right next to her. Not going anywhere. Not even close. By the time they got home, Namu had completely stopped crying. Halbae walked into the house looking very pleased with himself. 💡 Satoori Spotlight: 개안타 (gae-an-ta) In this episode, Halbae repeats a specific phrase over and over to comfort a frightened Namu in the back seat of the car: "나무야, 개안타. 할배 여있다." (Namu-ya, gae-an-ta. Halbae yeo-it-da.) "It's okay, Namu. Halbae is here." This phrase contains one of t...

Slice of Life: Episode 1 - The Tree Branch Baby

Image
Episode 1: The Tree Branch Baby Every family has a story about how they found their pet. Ours is a little different — Namu found us. It was October 2020 in Busan. For five long nights, a tiny, distressed voice cried from somewhere nearby. I kept hoping someone else would find her and help. On the fifth night, Halmae finally followed the sound and discovered where it was coming from. Deep inside a tangled pile of wooden branches, barely visible, was a tiny ginger tabby kitten, crying her heart out. But Halmae knew she wasn't fast enough to catch a frightened kitten by herself, so she immediately called me for backup. Thinking quickly, I grabbed some chicken cat treats and tied them to a piece of string. Standing by the woodpile, I carefully lowered the chicken and gently jiggled the string, trying to coax her out. It worked! Smelling the delicious treat, the tiny kitten slowly wiggled her way out of the branches, and that's when I was finally able to safely scoop her up. The mom...
