Slice of Life: Episode 7 - Selective Hearing

Image
Episode 7 - Selective Hearing Namu has absolutely excellent hearing. The tiniest rustle of a treat bag makes her jump instantly — so it is definitely not a medical issue. She simply doesn't choose to hear everyone equally. The other day, I beeped in through the front door and called her name from the entryway. Nothing. I walked over and tapped her gently on the back. Still nothing. I even carefully grabbed the very tip of her tail — and Namu didn't move a single inch. She just kept staring fixedly out the window. Like a furry piece of living room furniture, she sat there completely unbothered. She wasn't asleep, and there was absolutely no way she didn't know I was standing right there. She just... actively chose not to respond to me. But the moment Halbae calls her name from somewhere deep in the house, Namu instantly springs to life. At the first call, her ears perk up. At the second, she turns her head. By the third — she is already flying across the room. It happens...

💜 The Whole City Becomes a BTS Stage

BTS THE CITY ARIRANG Busan Complete Guide (June 5–21) Back in late April, I wrote a post about how to explore Busan — the hometown of Jimin and Jungkook — ahead of the June BTS concert. I already knew then that this was going to be a massive event, but as the date gets closer, the scale of it just keeps hitting differently. You've heard the news, right? Last week at the 52nd American Music Awards in Las Vegas, BTS swept Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best K-Pop Male Artist — a triple crown. They beat out Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, and Bruno Mars to take home the top prize, making it their second Artist of the Year win, five years after becoming the first Asian act ever to receive the honour in 2021. And that BTS is coming to Busan next week. Travel searches for Busan surged 2,375% within 48 hours of the world tour announcement. Both concert dates sold out during presale, and every foreign-friendly accommodation in the city — including temple stays — is fully booked. Reu...

Imaginary Adventures : Episode 3 - Too Hot, Too Cold, Just Right

Image
Halmae is a true Busan person. Busan winters are generally milder than most other cities in South Korea, but they are still not mild enough for Halmae. The exact moment the coastal wind picks up or the temperature drops even slightly, she is immediately flat on the warm Ondol (온돌) underfloor heating. As far as she's concerned, there is no better place on earth to be. Namu feels exactly the same way. In that sense, Namu is a true Busan cat. The slightest winter chill and she is stretched out long on the living room floor, completely melted. If you touch the exact spot where Namu has been lying, it is always the warmest patch in the entire room. Halmae and Namu are completely alike in that way. So Halmae always laughs and says in her thick accent: "나무가 내 닮았다 아이가." (Namu takes after me, doesn't she!) This episode's imaginary destination is the Jjimjilbang (찜질방) — a traditional Korean bathhouse and spa complex. It is a place Halmae absolutely loves, and a place Nam...

[Visit Busan Map #15] Nampodong on Foot

Image
🛍️Markets, Street Food, and Panoramic City Views Cross the main road from Jagalchi Market and you will find yourself in Nampo-dong (남포동) . Everything in this vibrant district is within comfortable walking distance — bustling traditional markets, a historic film square, a scenic hilltop park, and a towering observatory with views over the entire cityscape. While half a day is enough to see the highlights, a full day won't feel wasted. Nampo-dong is one of Busan's oldest and most storied neighborhoods. Following liberation and through the hardships of the Korean War, refugees from across the country settled here. The markets and narrow alleyways they built out of necessity are still standing today. The modern city has rapidly changed around it, but Nampo-dong keeps its vintage character going. 📦 1. Gukje Market (국제시장) When the Korean War turned Busan into the nation's temporary capital, desperate refugees arrived from all over the country and started selling whatever goods ...

Slice of Life: Episode 6 - Namu Goes Missing

Image
Episode 6 - Namu Goes Missing Halmae called me, her voice trembling. Namu was missing. She had called her name a hundred times and searched every single corner of the house — but there was absolutely nothing. To make matters worse, it was rapidly getting dark outside, and the weather was turning bitterly cold, as if a heavy rain was about to pour. Namu loves warmth more than anything else in the world, and Halmae was so deeply worried that she was already in tears. Halbae and Halmae immediately went outside and began walking the neighborhood in the freezing air. Round and round they went, calling her name for about two hours. The moment I got the frantic call, I left work instantly and drove straight over to their house — I wanted to help with the search party. But by the time I finally arrived, they had just found her. They were actually just about to call me with the good news. Where on earth was Namu? 🐾 💡 Korean Language Spotlight: Busan Dialect ( Satoori ) After finally finding N...

[Visit Busan Map #14] Jagalchi Market Guide

🐟The Seafood, the Flavors, and the Unstoppable Spirit of "Jagalchi Ajimae" Some tourist markets merely sell regional goods. Jagalchi Market, however, sells something much more profound — the living history, relentless grit, and unyielding spirit of the women who built it from the ground up. As South Korea's largest and most famous seafood market, this waterfront destination is far more than just a place to buy fish. Following the devastation of the Korean War, countless women who had tragically lost their husbands came to this very shore, selling whatever fish they could get their hands on simply to survive. That is how the legendary Jagalchi Ajimae were born — and that is exactly why this market feels like the true, beating heart of Busan. 👵 The Living Legends: Jagalchi Ajimae Most of the vibrant vendors operating here are women, formally known as Jagalchi Ajumeoni (a polite Korean term for a middle-aged or married woman). However, in the famously sharp Busan dialect...
