Imaginary Adventures : Episode 6 - A Temple for Two

When we sit together in the living room and chat, the conversation always finds its way back to Namu. Whenever a new episode of "Namu and Halbae" is finished, we watch it together — recording the satoori lines, laughing at the panels, and talking about where the next imaginary adventure should take them. Halmae always says with a smile that if it weren't for Namu, Halbae wouldn't say a word. And honestly, watching how his whole demeanor changes the moment Namu comes up in conversation, I think she's right.

Choosing Beomeosa for this episode felt natural. It's not far from home — a place we've visited together on quiet days when we just needed a bit of fresh air and a change of scenery. Halmae has always loved the mountains, but her knees have been giving her trouble lately, and that weighs on me. Halbae isn't really a mountain person himself, but he'd always go for Halmae's sake without a second thought. And I know — he'd do the same for Namu in a heartbeat.

Then there's Namu. At home, she's the picture of calm. But the moment she steps into the garden, something shifts. If a bird catches her eye, she freezes, drops low, and starts doing that little wiggle — completely locked in. She'll dart off so Halbae can't catch her, disappear behind something, and then jump out to startle him when he least expects it. To anyone who doesn't know her, she looks like a perfectly well-behaved house cat. But I know better. There's a little explorer hiding in there.

So what would Beomeosa have been like for Namu? Ancient trees stretching up to the sky, birdsong drifting through the forest, and an endless field of boulders just waiting to be scrambled over. Just imagining it, I can already see her eyes light up.

A gentle little cat and the grandfather who'd climb any mountain for her — their imaginary adventure begins. What happened when Namu met a thousand-year-old temple? Let's find out together!

💡Satoori Spotlight : 자빠지겠다(ja-ppa-ji-get-da)

"조심해라! 자빠지겠다!"
"Careful! You're gonna fall!"

자빠지겠다 (ja-ppa-ji-get-da) is a Gyeongsang-do dialect word meaning "you're going to fall." In standard Korean it would be 넘어지겠다, but the satoori version carries a whole different energy — more urgent, more vivid, more real. It's the kind of thing that bursts out of you when your heart jumps into your throat. Halbae watching Namu leap fearlessly across the stone field, scrambling after her, calling out in a panic — that's exactly this word. A little dramatic, maybe. But full of worry, and full of love.

🐾 Butler's Note

Drawing the stone field scene, I kept thinking about Namu in the garden. That same cat who spends her days lounging indoors turns into a completely different creature the moment she's outside. A bird appears and she's immediately in hunter mode — body low, tail still, that little wiggle starting up. She'll slip away before Halbae can catch her, tuck herself somewhere out of sight, and then spring out at him when he walks past.

Halbae always tells this story with a grin. Every time he goes out to the garden, Namu finds somewhere to hide and watches — waiting to see if he'll come looking for her. She has no idea he always knows exactly where she is. He pretends not to notice, walks right past her hiding spot, and lets her have her little game. He calls her such a funny creature when he tells it. But the look on his face when he does — that says everything.

So I like to think that at Beomeosa, before Halbae even had a chance to look around, Namu had already disappeared behind a boulder somewhere — watching to see if he'd come find her.

Drawing Namu leaping across the rocks shouting "This is amazing!" while Halbae chases after her yelling "Careful! You're gonna fall!" felt almost too familiar. I couldn't help laughing.

And then the quiet scene under the old tree. Namu looking up — "Are your legs okay?" And Halbae's answer: "I'm OK. You're good company." Drawing that, I found myself thinking of Halmae. Halbae was never really a mountain person, but he'd make that climb with her anyway. Now he'd make it again, for Namu. Different companion, same heart. Some things about him never change.

Does your pet have two sides like Namu — all calm indoors, then a completely different creature the moment they're outside?
