Episode 10 - Namu's Busy Day

Cats have their own routines. Sure, they spend most of their time sleeping — but when Namu is awake, she keeps herself very busy. And her mornings always begin with the sound of Halmae's familiar footsteps.

Namu lies next to the still-sleeping Halbae, ears perked up and alert. She waits patiently until one of them stirs. Quietly, she listens for the faint sound of movement from inside the room. The moment she hears it, she rises contentedly from her spot.

She stretches — one long, satisfying stretch — then heads toward the sound. Soon after, Halbae emerges from the room. True to his no-nonsense nature, the very first thing he does every single morning is walk straight to Namu's litter box and quietly crouch down to clean it. Without fail, every day, he tidies it up for her.

He may seem gruff on the outside, but his devotion to Namu never wavers. And wherever Halbae goes, a little orange shadow is never far behind. Namu's eyes follow his every move. When the litter box is cleaned and Halbae heads out to the yard, Namu follows without a sound.

In the yard full of green plants and flowers, Halbae begins his watering routine. Namu finds her spot — close enough to watch, far enough to stay dry. She simply stares at his back with those big round eyes. Every time he moves to a new corner of the yard, her gaze moves with him.

She trails after him like a little shadow sewn to his heels. So it's quite a sight when Namu is nowhere to be found in the yard — and instead sits perfectly still inside, in front of a closed door. Why won't she move from that spot?

You've seen how Namu follows Halbae absolutely everywhere, right? So when she's glued to his side once again, Halbae tosses out this line:

"나무야, 할배 고만 따라댕기고 밥 무라!"
(Namu, stop following Halbae around and go eat!)

밥 무라 means "go eat" or "eat your food" in the Busan and Gyeongsang dialect. It might sound blunt at first — the intonation is short and clipped — but in Korean culture, food is love. Especially for a stoic Busan grandfather who struggles to say tender things out loud, "밥 무라" is his way of saying "I see you, I care about you, now go take care of yourself." For Namu, who spent the whole day loyally shadowing him, it's the highest compliment Halbae knows how to give.

In Busan, ~무라 is added when offering or encouraging someone to eat or drink something. Here are some other examples you might hear:

1. "까까무라" (eat your snack) — What Halbae says when he slides Namu a little treat. "나무야, 까까무라."
2. "물무라" (drink your water) — Namu drinks more than most cats, but after the occasional hairball, Halbae checks in with a worried "나무야, 가서 물무라."
3. "마이무라" (eat a lot) — Namu is not a big eater — a few bites here, a few bites later. Halbae always worries she's not eating enough, and warmly nudges her with "나무야, 마이 무라."
