Slice of Life: Episode 11 - A Little Helper

 Cats are mysterious creatures. They seem to spend most of their time doing absolutely nothing — but sometimes, they're more diligent than any person in the house. And when Halbae starts moving, Namu's little paws get busy too. 

She wants to be part of everything he does. Tail held high, she hovers near his side. When a delivery box arrives? She's already there before Halbae even touches the tape. She stretches her neck to see what's inside, then settles quietly beside him, watching every move he makes. And the moment the box is emptied? She climbs right in — as if she personally needs to approve it before anything else can happen.

The same goes for laundry. Namu doesn't wander far — she follows Halbae right over. She finds her spot next to the neatly folding pile of clothes and watches his busy hands with those wide, serious eyes. And sure enough, the moment the laundry basket is empty, in she goes.

When Halbae moves to the kitchen sink, Namu is right behind him. She settles at his heels and waits patiently — perfectly still — until every last dish is done.

Wherever Halbae goes, tiny pawprints follow. She's his self-appointed assistant, trailing after him like she's on the clock. She may not be much practical help, but her presence alone keeps his day from ever feeling quiet or empty.

When all the chores are finally done, Halbae heads to the sofa and is asleep almost before he lies down. And Namu? She pads softly up onto the sofa, finds her spot right on top of his belly, and curls up. The two of them close their eyes together and drift off into a well-earned rest. Namu spent the entire day glued to Halbae's side through every single chore. So when they're finally resting together on the sofa, here's a warm Busan expression perfectly suited for the moment: "나무야, 할배 도와줘서 고맙데이!"(Namu, thanks for helping Halbae!)

In standard Korean it would be "도와줘서 고마워", but in the Gyeongsang dialect, "고마워" becomes "고맙데이". That little "~데이" at the end adds a layer of warmth and familiarity that's very distinctly Busan.

People from Gyeongsang-do aren't exactly known for being expressive — so the fact that Halbae is thanking his cat says a lot about just how special Namu is to him. 🐾

Namu never causes trouble. People often say, "Are you sure she's actually a cat?" But the moment she spots an empty box or a freshly emptied laundry basket, her true cat nature shines right through — in she goes, without hesitation. Watching her sit beside Halbae with that earnest, focused expression while he does his chores, you'd almost believe she genuinely thinks she's his assistant. For Namu, it's probably just curiosity and play. But the sight of her trotting after him, that little orange tail in the air, never gets old.
And our gruff Busan Halbae? He doesn't seem to mind the company one bit. He may toss words around like he doesn't care — but the moment Namu peers up at him from inside a box or basket, the corners of his eyes crinkle into the softest smile. Sometimes he'll pick up the whole box with Namu inside and walk around the living room announcing "Namu for sale~" with a completely straight face. Quiet Namu and no-nonsense Halbae — their daily life together is always funny, always peaceful.
But the most beautiful moment of all comes at the end of the day, when Halbae lies down on the sofa and Namu quietly climbs up onto his belly and settles in. She's worn herself out keeping watch over him all day, and within minutes she's fast asleep in his arms. Sharing warmth, sharing rest, melting the tiredness away together. Watching them like that, the whole house fills up with something soft and good. I feel so lucky to get to record these little moments — the deep love tucked inside one gruff Busan dialect word, and the sweet little cat who always stays close to receive it.
