Imaginary Adventures: Episode 10 - Our Own Red Carpet

Every October, Busan comes alive with movie fever — thanks to the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the largest film festival in Asia. Now in its 31st edition, the 2026 BIFF runs for ten days, from Tuesday, October 6th through Thursday, October 15th, centered around the Busan Cinema Center, with additional venues in Centum City and the BIFF Square in Nampo-dong. In an earlier post, we introduced the Cinema Center in detail — including its iconic "Big Roof." Today's story picks up right where that left off, following Namu on an imaginary early visit to the upcoming festival. The real thing is still about a month away, but since this is an "imaginary adventure," we got a little head start. If you're planning to visit in October, think of this episode as your preview.

Arriving beneath the Big Roof, Namu is once again awestruck by the sheer scale of the structure stretching overhead like a sky of its own. Before long, she notices something different in the air — an unusual buzz, a crowd gathering. A red carpet has been rolled out, and people in glamorous outfits are posing under a storm of camera flashes. "So this is the famous Busan International Film Festival!" Namu's eyes light up as she takes in the moment.

Halbae, who came along for this trip, hands Namu a festival pamphlet. "Ana." — his usual short, gruff way of offering something. Namu happily takes it with a polite "Thank you!" Then, spotting some familiar faces in the crowd, Halbae scratches his head. "Where did I see them?" Namu answers confidently: "On TV!"

That day, Halbae says something rather unexpected: "I like it here!" It's rare for him to express his feelings so openly, which makes the moment feel especially meaningful to Namu. She responds in kind: "Let's come again next year!"

💡Satoori Spotlight : 아나 Ana

아나 "Ana." (Standard Korean: 여기, 자, 받아. / English: "Here, take this.")

"Ana" is Gyeongsang-do dialect used when handing something to someone. Instead of politely saying "here you go," it's more of a short, no-frills word — just handed over with a quick "here." The phrase is brief, but the warmth behind it is anything but small.


Here's how it's used:

Handing over an object:  아나, 이거 니거다. "Ana, igeo ni kkeoda." → "Here, this is yours."

Offering a snack: 아나, 무라. "Ana, mura." → "Here, eat this."

Giving pocket money: 아나, 옛다. "Ana, yetda." → "Here, take it."

Halbae, a man of few words, hands Namu the pamphlet with this one gruff word — and somehow, that small gesture carries a quiet warmth all its own.

🐾 Butler's Note

The biggest movie and drama fan in our house is actually Halmae. Whenever she has free time, she settles in for her favorite dramas, and she can rattle off the names of actors like she's reading a cast list. Halbae, on the other hand... tends to fall asleep during movies, if we're being honest. He'll start off watching intently, and before you know it, his head is slowly drooping. At least he doesn't snore loudly — small mercies.

Here's the funny part, though: the one who actually recognizes the actors' faces best might just be Namu. Every time Halmae and Halbae settle in to watch TV, Namu is right there with them, curled up on someone's lap, eyes on the screen. Watching side by side every evening like that, she's probably picked up more about which actors show up often, or who's currently popular, than I have. So when Namu confidently answered "On TV!" in this episode, maybe that's the payoff of all those quiet evenings spent by Halmae and Halbae's side.

Getting to Busan

Where is Busan? Busan sits at the very southern tip of the Korean peninsula — as far south as you can go before you hit the sea. It's about 325km from Seoul, roughly the distance from London to Paris, or New York to Boston. Korea is a small country. [Visit Busan Map #16] Songdo Sky Cable Car

The temperatures have noticeably cooled down this week, haven't they? The heat that dominated all summer finally seems to be easing off. On weather like this, instead of jumping into the water for a swim, I found myself thinking a slow ride on the cable car over the sea sounded even better — no getting wet, just the breeze and an unobstructed view of the water. Today I want to introduce the Songdo Sky Cable Car in Busan's Seo-gu district, along with a few nearby spots worth pairing it with. The Songdo Sky Cable Car connects Songdo Base Station at Songdo Beach with Songdo Sky Park near Amnam Park. It first opened in 1964 as Korea's first sea-crossing cable car, closed in 1988 due to aging equipment, and reopened at a new site in 2017.
