If you're a rock fan, there's one fall festival in Busan you absolutely can't miss — the Busan International Rock Festival, known as Korea's longest-running rock festival. Remember the imaginary trip Namu and Grandpa took by bicycle two posts ago? The reed fields, the lotus ponds, the sunset — that was Samnak Ecological Park, and it's exactly where this festival takes place. If you only knew it as a peaceful walking spot, it might come as a surprise that it transforms into a rock festival stage every fall.

It's now less than ten days until the festival opens! Held every year at Samnak Ecological Park, this year's lineup is generating buzz that fully earns the word "unprecedented."

What is the Busan International Rock Festival?

It's the longest-running rock festival in Korea, first launched in 2000 and now in its 26th year. Held every fall along the banks of the Nakdong River at Samnak Ecological Park, it's a major outdoor concert bringing together domestic and international rock bands — and every year, buzz starts building the moment the lineup is announced.

From a Quiet Local Festival to a "Pre-Global Festival"

The truth is, this festival hasn't been in the spotlight for very long. It started growing rapidly after 2022, in the wake of COVID-19, and last year (2025) it expanded from two days to three, drawing a record-breaking 60,000 attendees and firmly establishing itself as Korea's leading music festival. That achievement earned it the "Best Cultural Tourism Festival" award from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2024.

This past March, it went a step further, earning selection as a "Pre-Global Festival" by the Ministry — a program that identifies festivals with genuine international potential as part of a push to welcome 30 million visitors to Korea annually. The selection comes with 250 million KRW in government funding, along with support for overseas marketing and multilingual services. The city of Busan has stated its goal of growing this festival into a world-class music event on par with the UK's Glastonbury or Japan's Fuji Rock Festival. A festival once known mostly by word of mouth among domestic rock fans is now genuinely stepping onto the world stage.

A Festival Built With the Local Community

Another thing that makes this festival special is its community-based model. Since last year, residents of Sasang-gu (the district where the park is located) have taken part directly as festival guides and even run the food booths themselves. It's not just about lending out a big stage — the goal is to grow the festival together with the local economy. Last year also saw the first "Road to BU-ROCK" pre-festival events held in Seoul, Busan, and Daegu, building excitement nationwide ahead of the main event.

Breaking Down the Star-Studded Lineup

This year's headliners are two living legends of heavy metal.

  • Megadeth: Formed in 1983, Megadeth is one of the founding bands of thrash metal. Widely known for having been formed by Dave Mustaine after his departure from an early lineup of Metallica, the band has led the heavy metal scene for over 40 years since. Their fast, aggressive playing and intricate guitar riffs are a thrash metal signature, and this appearance has generated especially strong buzz among Korean metal fans.
  • Avenged Sevenfold: The defining heavy metal/hard rock band of the post-2000s era, known for a more modern, accessible sound that's earned them a broad fan base. If Megadeth represents the essence of old-school heavy metal, Avenged Sevenfold represents rock as it sounds right now.

Getting to see two metal legends from different generations and styles on the same stage is, in itself, the biggest highlight of this year's lineup. The domestic lineup is just as impressive — spanning generations with Jannabi, CNBLUE, and Songolmae, and expanding further with the 2nd lineup announcement, which added a total of 18 teams including Hanroro and WOODZ. From understated indie sensibilities to full band sound to nostalgia for the 70s-80s generation, this festival packs in an unusually wide musical spectrum in a single location.

  • Shuttle bundle: A combined ticket-and-shuttle package is also available, making it easier to reach Samnak Ecological Park, which isn't the easiest spot to access by public transit alone.

Samnak Ecological Park: More Than Just a Festival Venue

As covered in our post from two weeks ago, Samnak Ecological Park is a massive 4.72-million-square-meter ecological park along the Nakdong River. Reed fields, lotus ponds, and wildflower areas are scattered throughout, and it's also known for its riverside bike paths and sunset views. Early October, when the festival takes place, happens to coincide with when the silver plume grass turns its silvery color — making it easy to build a full day out of it: reed-field scenery in the afternoon, a rock concert in the evening. Even if rock isn't your thing, it's worth a visit for an autumn walk through the reeds alone.

It still feels a little surreal that Megadeth and Avenged Sevenfold are playing the same stage — in Busan, no less. I always associated big rock festivals with Seoul or major overseas events, so it's genuinely exciting to see a lineup like this land here. And knowing that this festival has grown hand-in-hand with the local community makes it feel like more than just "a big concert." Even if you don't know much about rock, this seems like the kind of festival where you'd want to feel the energy in person.
