Episode 2: Little Namu in Gamcheon
One day, I asked Halbae a question. "If Namu could go anywhere with you, where would you take her?" He didn't have to think long. "Gamcheon," he said.
Gamcheon Culture Village (감천문화마을) is a place Halbae used to visit often — a hillside neighborhood of brightly painted houses and winding alleys, stacked up against the mountain overlooking the distant sea. He knew every staircase, every sharp turn.
But that was years ago. These days, his legs don't cooperate the way they used to, and Gamcheon is famously nothing but stairs. So, he simply stopped going. He didn't say any of this out loud, though. He just said "Gamcheon" — quietly, like the name had been waiting at the back of his mind.
So, in his Imaginary Adventure, that is exactly where they went.
Welcome back to Imaginary Adventures — where Halbae and Namu go everywhere Halbae wishes they could go together in real life. This episode: Gamcheon Culture Village. Halbae hasn't been in years. But today, he's going back — and he's bringing Namu.
🗣️ Honorifics Spotlight: "감사합니다" (Thank you)
On the scenic ridges of Gamcheon, as they look out over the colorful houses, Namu turns to Halbae with pure gratitude and politely says:
"데리고 와주셔서 감사합니다." (De-ri-go wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da.) > "Thank you for bringing me here."
"감사합니다" is the formal, polite way to say thank you in Korean — used with strangers, elders, or anyone you want to show deep respect to. Between close friends or to someone younger, you would simply say "고마워" (go-ma-wo) — shorter, warmer, and more casual.
But even though Halbae is family, Namu chooses to speak in these elegant honorifics to show just how much she respects and loves him. She is a cat of strict etiquette.
Here are a few other common ways you will hear this word combined in daily life:
도와주셔서 감사합니다 (do-wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da) — Thank you for your help.
와주셔서 감사합니다 (wa-ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da) — Thank you for coming.
기다려 주셔서 감사합니다 (gi-da-ryeo ju-syeo-seo gam-sa-ham-ni-da) — Thank you for waiting.
"감사합니다" is one of the very first Korean words most people learn — and easily one of the most frequently used. It is simple, sincere, and always appropriate. Namu speaks in these beautiful honorifics to Halbae and Halmae — always. Because she's exactly that kind of cat.
📝 Butler's Note
Halbae fell in love with Gamcheon long before it became world-famous. Before the colorful murals, before the trendy cafés, and before the waves of global tourists — he was already quietly walking those lonely alleys. Then his legs started giving him trouble, and the visits stopped. Gamcheon is, after all, all stairs.
In his Imaginary Adventure, his legs still hurt. As he stops on the steep stone steps, sighing, "These old legs of mine..." ("늙어서 다리가 말을 안 듣네"), he doesn't pretend things are easier than they actually are. But with Namu walking right beside him, asking, "Are you feeling OK, Halbae?", the daunting stairs felt a little shorter somehow.
During their walk, they saw the new Little Prince (어린왕자) house, and a massive crowd gathered around a vibrant mural of people Halbae didn't recognize at all. (It was BTS, apparently. Halbae had absolutely no idea who they were, simply muttering, "Must be someone important.") The village had changed so much. But deep down, it was still his place.
As the sun went down over the terraced houses, they sat together on a ledge and Halbae said: "The sunset's prettier with you here, Namu." Namu looked up and replied: "Everything is better with you, Halbae!" Halbae didn't say anything back. He just smiled.
When I originally asked Halbae where he'd want to go — if he could go absolutely anywhere with Namu — he instantly said "Gamcheon." A place he can't easily get to anymore in the physical world, but the one place he would want to go first, if only Namu could be there with him.
