Walking Through Busan's Summer Nights: Busan Night Walk 42K

With daytime highs hitting 38°C — and 40°C in some areas — who wants to step outside these days? Add tropical nights on top of that, and the heat barely lets up even after dark. When even standing in the shade leaves you gasping, maybe the answer is to give up on daytime altogether and move when it's at least a little cooler. So today, I want to introduce a summer festival that proves walking at night can be its own kind of adventure: Busan Night Walk 42K.

As the name suggests, this is an overnight walking festival with four course options — the full 42K, plus 24K, 16K, and a brand-new 8K added this year. It's not a race against the clock; the whole point is to walk at your own pace and take in Busan's nighttime atmosphere. Cool river breeze instead of blazing sun, quiet night views instead of daytime crowds — it's honestly a little surprising how special a night walk can turn out to be.

  • Dates: Saturday, August 29 – Sunday, August 30, 2026 (overnight, two days)
  • Location: APEC Naru Park, Haeundae-gu, Busan
  • Courses: 42K / 24K / 16K / 8K
  • Format: Non-competitive walk
  • Capacity: 6,000 participants (registration closes once each course fills up)

There's a saying that Busan comes alive at night, once the rest of the city falls asleep. Even familiar daytime scenery takes on a completely different face when you walk through it after dark.

All four courses start from APEC Naru Park and branch out into different routes depending on distance.

  • 8K (departures at 19:00, 20:00, 21:00): A short beginner-friendly route along the waterfront path
  • 16K (departures at 19:00, 20:00, 21:00, 22:00): Passes through Sebyeong CP near Sebyeong Bridge before looping back
  • 24K (departures at 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00): Goes past Sebyeong CP up to Busan National University CP and back
  • 42K (departure at 18:00): The full course, passing through Guseo CP, Busan National University CP, and Sebyeong CP, then continuing on to Millak CP and Yongho Bay CP — a long journey heading upstream along the river before returning toward the coast.

The longer the distance, the wider the course stretches — toward the upstream river area (Oncheoncheon, near Busan National University) on one end, and toward the coast (Millak, Yongho Bay) on the other. So depending on how much you want to walk, you can take in exactly as much of Busan's night scenery as you like. Participants are required to pass through designated checkpoints (CPs) along the course, and each checkpoint provides basic water and snacks for safety.

Eligibility & Time Limits

  • The 42K course is open only to adults 18 and older; the other courses (24K, 16K, 8K) have no age restriction, though participants 15 and under are encouraged to walk with a guardian.
  • Time limits are set per course: 11 hours for 42K, 6.5 hours for 24K, 4.5 hours for 16K, and 2.5 hours for 8K, calculated from each course's final start time. It's worth pacing yourself with plenty of margin to spare.
  • This is a non-competitive walking event — there's no time tracking or ranking. Completing the walk is the only goal.

What You Get

All participants receive the following:

  • Finisher's medal: A keepsake to remember the moment you completed the walk
  • Official T-shirt & walking vest: Breathable fabric designed to stay comfortable even on hot summer nights
  • Bib number: Your official race number
  • LED badge: A little something extra to light up the night
  • Commemorative socks: A small souvenir to remember your night in Busan
  • Plus a few additional items, according to the organizers.

One nice touch worth mentioning: there's an option to have a custom message engraved on your finisher's medal. After completing the walk, you can end up with a one-of-a-kind medal personalized just for you — a meaningful way to mark the occasion if you're looking for something extra special. (Note that this is a paid add-on service, and it's only available to participants who register and pay for it in advance.)

Registration Fees

  • 42K: ₩59,000 (18:00 start)
  • 24K: ₩49,000 (choose from 18:00, 19:00, 20:00, or 21:00)
  • 16K: ₩42,000 (choose from 19:00, 20:00, 21:00, or 22:00)
  • 8K: ₩38,000 (choose from 19:00, 20:00, or 21:00)

Who This Is For

  • Anyone who wants to experience Busan's night scenery in a unique way
  • Those looking for a meaningful challenge — solo, or with family, friends, or a partner
  • People who care more about the experience of finishing than about any record

I really liked this line from the organizers: "With every step, Busan keeps unfolding into a different city for you." The same city can feel entirely different depending on the pace and time you walk through it.

Registration Is Still Open — For Now

Early bird tickets are already sold out, but regular tickets are still available. That said, popular time slots have reportedly started running out of certain T-shirt sizes, so if you have a size preference, it's best to register soon.

How to Register

  1. Choose your course and register through the Urban Sports website.
  2. If you purchase before 17:00 on August 14 (Fri), your gear ships in advance. (Later purchases ship after regular ticket sales close, arriving within 2–3 days depending on your address.)
  3. Arrive 30 minutes to an hour before your scheduled start time; departures are staggered.
  4. After finishing, apply for your completion certificate through the Urban Sports website (application period: August 29 – September 6).

Cancellation & Refund Policy

  • Full refunds available through 17:00 on August 14 (Fri)
  • No cancellations or refunds after that (since gear production begins at that point)
  • Course, start time, gender, and date of birth cannot be changed after purchase (you'll need to cancel and re-register to make changes)
  • Note that the course itself may be altered without prior notice due to rain, road damage, or similar issues — worth keeping in mind before you register.

If Busan's daytime this summer is defined by record-breaking heat and scorching pavement, its nights are made of river breezes, bridge lights, and the warmth of people walking together. Whether or not you finish the full distance, escaping this brutal heat for a night walk feels like a whole new way to get through the season.

How do you all beat the summer heat? If you have any favorite night walks or nighttime activities, I'd love to hear your tips in the comments! 🌃
